According to the Huron Daily Plainsman, the SD Farmers Union wants an anti-COOL Secretary of Agriculture!? See this:
South Dakota Farmers Union President Dennis Wiese said Rep. Charlie Stenholm, D-Texas, would be a good replacement as secretary of agriculture. “This is an opportunity for the Bush administration to demonstrate that they want to move forward in a bipartisan fashion,” he said. As agriculture is typically a nonpartisan issue in Congress, Stenholm’s nomination could provide a good opportunity because he is the ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee, Wiese said. Stenholm is a member of the Blue Dog Democrats and has sided with the Bush administration on other issues.
“It makes a good political fit,” Wiese said.
But Thune disagrees, saying when he served with Stenholm on the House Agriculture Committee the Texas representative was often on the wrong side of the issues important to South Dakota producers. Stenholm has also been a major opponent of country-of-origin labeling in the House, Thune said.
