One of the premises of this democracy is that the government operates with the "consent of the governed." That consent is given through the election of representatives to do the people's will. But what happens when a representative won't say what his position is?? You know, like Daschle refusing to tell a reporter for the Rapid City Journal what his position on abortion is, i.e. whether he was pro-choice or not. In fact, Daschle was screaming at the reporter for even asking the question. What does that tell you?
