This person lives in Aberdeen, which both Thune and Daschle visited last week:
As you can see in the news, we had both candidates here in Aberdeen last week and I had a chance to go to both events and talk to both candidates briefly. I thought Daschle looked tired and uncertain of himself. He stumbled through a very pedestrian stump speech. You'd think by this time they'd have this down pat, but he was searching for words at times and telling stories badly, stories he has no doubt told 1000 times. John of course was energetic and personable and something Daschle can never be, legitimately funny. This is my impression of Daschle at this point. He has really gone Washington, but in a particular way. Having been in Congress 26 years, ascending to a leadership post, and winning re-election with ease, Daschle has come to view his seat as his birth right. He almost seems annoyed to be campaigning. I think you could see that in the debates. He is insulted that he should have to come back and defend himself against someone so beneath him (in his eyes) like John Thune. And why should he have to engage in the unseemly art of politicking? Why can't we just leave him alone so he can go back to being powerful and his Georgetown cocktail parties? It isn't just campaign rhetoric that Daschle has lost touch. He takes his seat for granted, and that is bad for South Dakota.
