We've started our discussion with Laura. SDP is taking it all down, so see his site now. I'll have more in a minute.
Laura: "undeniable liberal bias of the Argus proves the need for the New Media"
Laura: "incredible that liberals aren't more concerned about the monopoly of information in South Dakota"
Laura: Daschle protected by the "old lumbering media dinosaurs of the left"
Laura: Daschle is a "mirror of Kerry" in terms of trying to muddle and confuse issues.
Laura: the media is "excessively protective" of certain pols. This sounds very familiar.
Laura: when discussing how small the media universe is in South Dakota, Laura notes that the more pols and reporters are pals the more difficult it is for there to be anything approaching objectivity, especially when many reporters simply want their person to win. She discusses how close Brokow, Rather, and Jennings are and how they look out for one another.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I'm told to invite anyone who is interested to the Ramkota in Sioux Falls for a rally featuring Laura and Thune at 5:00--apparently there will be a watch party for the KDLT debate tonight after the rally, so come on out.
Laura: "imagine if bloggers weren't around, if talk radio wasn't around, or other sources of information weren't available." Scary thought. I think Patrick Lalley of the Argus Leader once asked this same question.
Laura: Thune will be a major power in Washington once he arrives. He'll have more "clout" than Daschle ever dreamed of, especially in a Republican Washington.
Laura: Judicial nominations is a big issue. Daschle's figure of 95% confirmed is "way off" because that includes lots of meaningless trial court appointments. The critical issue is appointments to powerful courts of appeal in DC and the 4th Circuit and the 10th Circuit etc. The failure to give Miguel Estrada a vote in the Senate was an "outrage."
Laura: Laura also became a Catholic recently and she was very interested in the local Bishop.
KELO-AM: Laura is now on the radio, 1320 AM.
Laura: Thune will have "instant credibility" and "instant power" in Washington.
Laura: "Tom Daschle has had a good run... But it's over. The Argus Leader can hold the dam for only so long."
Laura: "Daschle is palsy-walsy with" the Argus Leader and Dave Kranz. Can't believe Kranz will moderate the upcoming debate on KELO.
Laura: South Dakota suffers from a "information deficit" because of the Argus Leader.
Laura: She's very much aware of "Washington Daschle" who is allied with Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, Ted Kennedy etc...
Laura: "South Dakota is a great state because of its values, not because of dependence on government."
