A woman who used to support Daschle because he told her he was pro-life is now working "doubly hard" to defeat him. She's now "ashamed" she supported Daschle and "gullibly" fell for his claims that he was prolife. SDP has all her thoughts, but here's an excerpt:
I am ashamed to admit I worked to help Tom Daschle get elected when he first ran for Senate many years ago. I did so gullibly believing his assertion (along with the blessing of the Presentation Sisters) that he was pro-life. Imagine my horror and regret as I watched him repeatedly toe the NARAL (National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League) line.
Her reference to the nuns is explained in this article. Here's the relevant part:
To hold his Democratic base together enough to prevail in the election and avoid McGovern's impending fate, Daschle emphasized his Catholic credentials. Daschle sent a letter to voters saying "I am opposed to abortion. I do not support it. I have never supported it. It is an abhorrent practice. As a citizen and as a lifelong member of the Catholic faith I will do everything in my power to persuade others that abortion is wrong." To solidify his Catholic bona fides, Daschle enclosed a letter from eight Catholic nuns saying "We know and we tell those with whom we speak of your abhorrence for abortion — and of your commitment to life."
While Daschle told ministers in earlier elections that he thought abortion was "murder," now Daschle sends fundraising letters for NARAL touting his "pro-choice leadership" in the Senate.
This issue is an example of my chickens-coming-home-to-roost theory--Daschle's record of saying one thing in South Dakota and doing another in Washington is catching up to him.
UPDATE: A reader makes a good point about noting the recent Christianity Today story quoting the Bishop of Sioux Falls: "You cannot vote for a politician who is pro-abortion, when you have a choice, and remain a Catholic in good standing."
Again, while national magazines and newspapers have covered the Bishop's recent statement, the Argus Leader has NOT.
