Remember all the talk about Tim Giago dropping out of the Senate race because of a deal with Senator Daschle which may have included Wind Cave in the Black Hills? SDP has the details HERE. Ryne has a lot HERE. Lots more HERE. And then there's this report tonight on Rapid City television:
KOTA TelevisionWind Cave Report
9/24/04 Noon
Debra Jensen: Wind Cave National Park could be run by the nine Sioux Indian tribes in South Dakota. In fact this week's Lakota Journal newspaper is quoting sources that are close to former Lakota Journal publisher Tim Giago that say that an agreement to hand over Wind cave is part of reason that Giago decided to drop out of the U.S. Senate race several months ago. Now this reporter has been working on the same story for several weeks and two sources who asked not to be identified did confirm that a Wind Cave deal has been proposed. However, they could not provide any details to me. In a Lakota Journal report, Giago was quoted as saying that he and Daschle had agreed to a deal.
On Screen: Tim Giago on Wind Cave:
"Every Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota will be shocked and surprised at some of the issues Senator Daschle will bring forth."
Debra Jensen: Quote, Every Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota will be shocked and surprised at some of the issues Senator Daschle will bring forth, Giago has said. Now the reported deal was a surprise to the mayor of Hot Springs who once had a gift shop at Wind Cave. Reacting to the news, Carl Oberlitner told me:
On Screen: Carl Oberlitner on Wind Cave:
"You caught me flat footed. I haven't heard that. We hope to talk with Senator Daschle later tonight about the issue."
