As previously noted, Daschle was taking some heat from the Lakota Journal for not keeping his word--given to Tim Giago to nudge him out of his third-party run for the Senate--and holding a meeting in August with tribal leaders about the future of the Black Hills. It turns out that the heat worked and that the meeting has now been scheduled for September 25th in the Black Hills. The Washingont Post reported last spring what the meeting would address:
While Giago would not go into detail about the issues he and Daschle discussed, he has said that he wanted Daschle to open dialogue on returning the sacred Black Hills to the tribes of the Sioux Nation, and to help remedy the lack of economic opportunities on the state's reservations, the poorest in the country.
Naturally, none of this has been reported in South Dakota. You'd think that this would be a major issue and that, you know, a reporter would actually pick up the phone and make some calls. You'd think, anyway.
