Back in April, Daschle begged prominent Sioux writer and publisher Tim Giago to drop his third party bid for the Senate and finally made a deal with Giago, pledging his "word of honor," and promised a major announcement in August at a meeting with tribal leaders. Giago said:
“A lot of the things that were discussed I can’t discuss here,” Giago said. “Tom wants to speak with the tribal leadership first—he wants to meet with tribal leaders in August. At that time, the issues that were discussed on Saturday will be laid out for input from the tribal leadership.” ...Giago said, “Every Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota will be shocked and surprised at some of the issues Senator Daschle will bring forth.”
In a recent column in the Lakota Journal by Serenity Banks the author writes:
One would think, if this gathering is really going to happen, someone might know when, where, and who is involved. But nobody's talking, so what does that tell us? ... [T]he basis of Giago's dropping out of the race was Daschle's "word of honor" that this would happen. ... After repeated phone calls and inquiries, Daschle's deputy press secretary still says he hasn't been able to find anyone who knows what's going on. ... So far we haven't seen anything we haven't seen before--just the typical political foot-dragging and question-dodging we're all used to in all forms of government. ... [S]ome of us are still expectantly waiting to see if [Daschle] will live up to his "word of honor" right now. The Lakota people live by their word; wouldn't it be nice if politicians did the same?
None of this has been discussed in the major newspapers in South Dakota.
