See this story about a pro-gay marriage group protesting Daschle at the convention. Excerpt:
Stonewall Democrats, the Human Rights Campaign, GLAD and other groups are holding a social night at a Boston gay nightclub July 26th.DontAmend.com, the group that fought the FMA over the internet, says it will picket the event because a number of Democratic Party delegates will be attending.
The organization is opposed to Sen. John Kerry's support for amending the Massachusetts Constitution to ban same-sex marriage, although Kerry is opposed to a similar federal amendment.
"Rather than forthrightly saying that the civil rights of millions of Americans should be defended, most Democratic politicians have treated our equal marriage rights as at best, an unfortunate 'diversion' in their election campaigns," said Andy Thayer, National Action Coordinator for DontAmend.com.
In addition to Kerry, other leading Democrats in Massachusetts are in the forefront of the move to amend the state constitution. The proposed amendment could be put to voters in 2006.
In addition Tom Daschle, the Democratic leader in the Senate, avidly courted the religious right: "Marriage is a sacred union between men and women, the group says.
"These attitudes are an insult to the humanity of every Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered person in this country," said Thayer. "Can you imagine the NAACP endorsing a candidate who opposed legal equality for African-Americans?"
