Senator Robert Byrd was on Russert this morning talking about his new book. He took the Lapham approach--we were tricked into war and the US Senate completely knuckled under because Senators were "weak" and feared being called unpatriotic. Before Daschle and Mitchell, Byrd was the Democratic leader of the US Senate. Since Daschle, Kerry, and Edwards all voted for the war, Russert had some obvious questions for Byrd, but he rather gently backed down when it became clear Byrd didn't realize the true meaning of what he was saying and seemed a bit confused.
