Here's a story by Dave Kranz of the Argus Leader in this morning's paper. At an event yesterday, Thune said Washington was too partisan and Daschle responded thusly:
Daschle responded from Washington, saying he offers an independent voice for his constituents. "The question for me on every issue is what is best for South Dakota and the country," Daschle said.
One can see that Daschle is trying to use Herseth's "independent voice" argument, which he used to great effect early in his political career. This is ridiculous, of course, since Daschle has become a partisan fighter and is actually in charge of killing the President's agenda in the Senate. The Argus should have run one of the many national stories which appeared in May in many national publications talking about the partisanship of the Senate and readers would know this. As for putting South Dakota first, it's clear that Daschle let the ethanol bill die for partisan reasons. The Argus hasn't explained this either, or reported on Senator Grassley's floor statement explaining Daschle's move in intricate detail. This is a mystery to me. It's a major statement on what happened to ethanol and the Argus has ignored it. It's unbelievable.
