A few weeks ago I noted how Daschle implied he was for tort reform in South Dakota and then went back to DC and voted against it and the Argus Leader didn't cover it. The Argus still hasn't explained how Daschle, as Senate leader, has been consistently blocking tort reform to keep the trial lawyers, a major Democratic donor base, happy (see this Financial Times story). Here's a big chance for the Argus to do a story about Daschle's efforts to block tort reform and how thankful the trial lawyers are. To wit (from The Hotline):
Daschle will accept an award from the NY Trial Lawyers Assn. at a 4/29 dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria. "He is being honored for his work in opposing tort reform. Political strategist James Carville will serve as the keynote speaker" (Crains' Insider, 4/28).
It's a chance for the Argus to dig into the "specifics" of a real issue dividing the two candidates, which is what Mr. Beck says he wants.
